“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10)
My grandmother used to hum a version of this Bible verse. The words she used were “Create in me a clean heart, Oh God, and renew a right spirit within me”.
For the longest time, I felt the differences were slight, changed just to suit the meter of the chorus. Then one day, I read the same verse in Eugene Peterson’s Psalm 51 The Message.
God, make a fresh start in me,
shape a Genesis week from the chaos of my life.
It’s the first time I really thought about it. A Genesis week. Genesis, as in Adam and Eve and the garden of Eden. Genesis, as in the formation of something new.
From chaos. My life held a fair bit of chaos, once upon a time. I’d failed at a great many things–marriage, childbearing, friendships. I could make a very long list. Most of us could.
Or, we can ask God to make a fresh start. A Genesis week.
Dare we be bold enough, brave enough to seek a Genesis year?
