September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day. One of the reasons I wrote my novel was because my nephew was a victim of suicide in 2010. As a survivor to his death, I experience significant pain. My entire family does, and while we learn to live without him, we’re never far from remembering him.
It’s important to realize though, there are other survivors too. Survivors like 13-year-old Carolyn. She made a choice for suicide when she was only 11. She was not, thankfully, successful.
Be inspired by our guest blogger. Give thanks that she survived to tell her story. Then be part of the solution so more kids like her can make it.
Hi, for those of you who don’t know me, my name is Carolyn and I tried to commit suicide when I was 11.
You know, there’s a saying that I really cherish. That is ‘Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to know Jesus is the rock at the bottom’. I got bullied a lot in school and was a loner. Eventually I was convinced that I was a failure and tried to end it all.
By nothing less than the pure grace of God, I survived my suicide attempt. I was angry, why did God save me? Counselors were no help, they would ask me questions the answers of which I didn’t know.
Then, one day, I was hit by the realization that I had been missing. God. I had gone through the Christian motions of life, my dad was a pastor, but there was no God in my life.
My parents were at their wit’s end trying to find cures that didn’t exist for me. They didn’t joke around anymore, they hardly seemed to smile. It was very obvious that they thought they did something wrong. But it wasn’t them. It was me and God.
I am proud to say that today I make people laugh and am one of the most satisfied people on Earth. I have my wonderful life, a great family, and a God who loves me. What could be better?
Remember, Jesus is the rock bottom. You can’t fall from his gaze.
13-year-old Carolyn is a Washingtonian and hopes to be a Computer and Information Research Scientist. She has a lucky spoon, her lucky headband is camo, and she never wears matching socks. She lives with her three younger siblings, her mother and father, two cats, a dog, four fish, a leopard gecko, and a water snail. Talk about a zoo! Her friends are convinced she is a secret agent but she makes no promises other than she will not harm any one with a paper clip or other potential weapon.
